Meet the team Monday!
Week five! As our team grows, it’s a privilege for us to share with you their stories and expertise. Last week you met Stephanie Houghton, our specialist recruiter for the UK cosmetics and personal care industries. Today, we are very pleased to introduce you to Paul Mears; our expert in chemical synthesis. We will share a staff story with you every Monday, until Christmas Eve.
Paul is a PhD chemist and experienced recruiter. For Science Solutions, he recruits for the UK-wide speciality chemicals and drug discovery sectors, with a focus on chemical synthesis. Paul works closely with colleagues who specialise in recruitment for other areas of the UK scientific and technical industries, including our pharmaceutical, cosmetics and polymers departments.
A career in science came quite naturally to Paul; he loves problem-solving and the thrill of understanding “things” to greater and greater depth.
During his undergraduate degree in the Colour and Polymer Chemistry Department at the University of Leeds, he undertook a placement year in the speciality chemicals sector working on catalogue synthesis and flavours and fragrance compounds at Endeavour Speciality Chemicals (now part of Robinson Brothers). In the following year he decided to pursue a PhD in Organic Chemistry at the University of Manchester in natural product synthesis. During these four years and a post-doctoral placement, he presented work in peer-reviewed journals and at international conferences as far away as São Paulo, Brazil. By this point, Paul was itching for a new challenge and the opportunity to take his existing skills into a whole new arena.
Working his way through a household recruitment brand to Executive Consultant, operating in the broadly defined scientific sector of the North Eastern region of England, Science Solutions offered Paul the chance to focus solely on the UK-wide speciality chemicals sector. Given Paul’s background, this is where his strengths lie, and he is doing a wonderful job supporting companies to find experts in chemical synthesis across the UK.
For job seekers, and experts in the industry who are looking to further their careers, Paul’s background is crucial in understanding their expertise and supporting them in finding the perfect employer. Paul also has many years’ experience supporting people to relocate across the UK for new roles and is extremely committed to providing CV, application and interview support.
Working at Birchwood Park
Paul is based at our Birchwood Park office and enjoys the flexibility of extended lunch breaks to allow him to use the on-site gym and leisure facilities. Birchwood Park is home to 165 companies and provides an outstanding working environment, in a well-connected location. Wellness weeks, outdoor boot camps, Summer BBQ’s, film nights and allotments are just a few of the little extras that employees can benefit from. Science Solutions encourage all staff to use their lunch breaks for fresh air and exercise. All members of the team can take a 1.5-hour lunch break if they are going to the gym or using their lunch to exercise.
Keeping fit and enjoying the outdoors
Away from the office, you’ll find Paul mountain biking, rock climbing, playing football, at the gym or boxing. He had a few days off last week and was straight over to the National Whitewater Centre in North Wales. He’s not a fan of sitting still, but when he occasionally does, he enjoys music (all sorts from old-fashioned classics like Ella Fitzgerald through to stuff that’ll make your ears bleed!) and wouldn’t mind sitting still to drive a Mercedes-Benz G 63 AMG 6X6.
