Meet the team Monday – Christmas Eve!

Week eleven! As our team grows, it’s a privilege for us to share with you their stories and expertise. Last week you met Chris Morris, from our biotechnology team. Today, for our penultimate ‘Meet the team’ blog, let’s meet Darren Hawley: our specialist recruiter for the UK polymers and materials industries. Our final staff story will be shared with you on New Year’s Eve.

DARREN HAWLEY

Darren is our polymers and materials expert. After studying Chemistry at the University of Manchester, Darren joined Science Solutions as a Scientific Recruitment Specialist, focussing on the provision of permanent, temporary and contract staff for clients within the polymers and materials industries across the UK.

Professional background

Darren studied Chemistry at the University of Manchester. As part of his studies, Darren completed a summer placement on an industrial project: formulating, developing and analysing a variety of polymer blends for a global wallpaper manufacturer. His family have a background in chemistry and working in the scientific industry. Darren has combined his technical knowledge, academic and industrial experience with his exemplary attitude to work and doing the best possible job. He’s an asset to Science Solutions and is a great industry connection for those responsible for the recruitment of staff, as well as for professionals in the polymers and materials industries who may require career support now or in the future.

Polymers are an integral part of our daily lives and the UK industry continues to flourish, with sustained investment and many companies predicting increases in profitability. This niche industry sector employs around 170,000 people in the UK and turns over £23.5 billion. Despite continued growth, the British Plastics Federation (BPF), report that in 2018, 46% of the plastics industry find trouble in recruiting new staff.

Darren understands that a focus on modern manufacturing methods, systems and innovation, is paramount when commencing a new staff search. He works closely with colleagues, including those who recruit for the speciality chemicals industry. Our team get to know business and skill-set requirements and the deeper culture and ethos of the companies we work with. We understand the impact of globalisation on business, and we seek out industry professionals who are upskilled in change management, business development and technical R&D.

With the cost of raw materials on the rise, we are mindful to review the commercial awareness of our candidates; valuing efficiency, sales skills and sustainability, as well as those who excel in the current eco-business climate.

Working at our Lancaster office

In Lancaster, our office is next to the Lancaster Canal; a peaceful location within the city centre. Darren makes use of the small gym which is approximately 10 metres from the Lancaster office; our extended lunch breaks mean Darren can go to the gym at lunchtime when he wants to. On other days, he makes use of the close proximity of the town centre and stocks up on KFC instead. Lancaster is a great place to live and work, being on the doorstep to the Lake District and yet only 2.5 hours on a direct train to London Euston.

Family, sport and food

Away from the office, Darren loves spending quality family time with his 1-year-old daughter Isabella and his partner Danielle. He enjoys watching sports, mainly following Sheffield United despite the heartbreak that usually comes with this. Whenever he gets the chance, Daz loves cooking for family and socialising with friends – he has never been a stranger to the odd Bellini (or several).

It was a pleasure working with Darren; his communication levels were fantastic along with his efficient and professional way of working. Darren quickly understood the culture of the business and delivered extremely quickly on a notoriously hard role to fill. I wouldn’t hesitate in working with Darren again.

Head of Training Academy

Darren was incredibly helpful with my recent recruitment. He contacted me with information on a role he was looking to recruit and checked whether it would be suited to my experience. He was on the phone every step of the way and available outside of his office hours due to my work commitments. It’s been a pleasure working with Darren and, had he not sought me out and given me a good understanding of the new role, I wouldn’t have found it on my own. Importantly, having had some really bad experiences with recruiters in the past, it’s nice to see a recruiter that keeps you informed and has good ethics and attention to details.
