A global chemicals and coatings company are looking for a Production Technology Chemist to join their team near Edinburgh.

As Production Technology Chemist you are responsible for planning and carrying out laboratory work to support both R&D and plant manufacturing. You will need to evaluate R&D plant data to identify areas requiring process improvements that will reduce cycle times and realise cost reduction opportunities, while meeting quality, cost, operability, productivity & SHE targets.

To be considered for this role you will hold a degree in Chemistry or related subject and hold previous experience as a a experienced chemist with knowledge of synthetic chemistry, physical chemistry and a wide range of analytical techniques. Experience of chemistry or physical processing (size reduction) in a manufacturing environment


The job role is split into 3 main areas; Laboratory Development Work, Manufacturing Support and Delivering Improvements:

Laboratory Development Work

  • Planning and carrying out laboratory work to develop and improve processes for existing products
  • Carrying out analysis to the required standard, both in line and off line, to allow maximum understanding of data from laboratory work
  • Carry out all experimental work under the guidance of the appropriate local systems

Manufacturing Support

  • Carrying out laboratory support and troubleshooting work to facilitate the solution of manufacturing process and raw material problems in order to allow the restoration of process operation
  • Participating in appropriate on-plant supervision (shift work), to permit the safe and effective trial of process modifications or scale-up studies

Delivering Improvement

  • Identify and deliver potential process improvements and cost savings while carrying out development work
  • Record all laboratory work and data in the electronic notebook and use this for the preparation of reports and/or presentations
  • Use of statistics for data treatment & interrogation

Optimise process, development and performance

  • Manage the siting of new products, processes and improvement of existing products and processes
  • Identify, investigate and initiate options for improving operational efficiency, process variability, quality and yield performance of existing processes
  • Maintain a comprehensive system for recording, tracking and analysis of process performance data including statistical methods of control and trend analysis

Continuous improvement and project delivery

  • Investigate and develop solutions for intractable technical problems encountered in the manufacture of complex dye molecules and dispersions to achieve continued improvement of plant and process performance
  • Plan, control and lead activities to successfully implement 'Management of Change' processes to improve process efficiency and product performance with no impact on product quality
  • Carry out plant support activity as required for start-up projects and to aid resolution of routine manufacture process issues

Maintain standards and manage compliance

  • Define and deliver appropriate training and technical support to staff prior to and during trial manufacture to ensure processes are established safely and effectively to meet cost, SHE, time and quality targets
  • Motivate, train and develop staff to achieve higher professional standards and realise their potential as individuals and as a team
  • Act as technical liaison on technical issues surrounding QA compliance



  • Educated to at least degree level in chemistry
  • 5+ years' experience in RxD
  • Experience of synthetic chemistry, physical chemistry & analytical techniques
  • Experience of process development in a laboratory or chemical manufacturing environment
  • Proven knowledge and understanding of the RxD process & equipment
  • In depth knowledge of Lab SHE/ Quality systems and compliance
  • Excellent data interrogation and presentation skills
  • Training and mentoring skills e.g. for new starts


  • Application of statistics to data treatment & interrogation
  • Working knowledge of manufacturing SHE/ quality systems
  • Experience of Hazard and Operability Studies
